ARTIST'S STATEMENT

'Desmond Tutu' (Artist's Proof, 1/1) multiple colour woodcut image, 445mm x 680mm burnished on Fabriano


The subject for the work is a portrait of cleric and theologian, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu OMSG CH GCStJ. A photograph by the South African photographer, Benny Gool was used as a source of reference for the woodcut image -

Two multiples of the same image are printed next to each other, and in two separate colours which symbolize colours in Christianity – Blue signifies blue skies or life giving air, hope or good health. An alternate colour for the season of advent; Red symbolizes the blood of martyrs as well as Christ's death on the cross. It also symbolizes fire, and the colour of the Holy Spirit.
